Mary dressed as Princess Leia in Coronation Street

Weirdest Soap outfit yet? Here’s why Mary wore a Princess Leia costume to Norris Cole’s funeral in Coronation Street…

In a galaxy far, far away… there is a character in Soapland dressed as Princess Leia for a funeral… Just as we were thinking that this was a quiet time for soap fashion, Mary saves the week by wearing possibly the strangest outfit we’ve seen in a Soap – even surpassing Sean’s peacock get-up.

So why did Mary dress as Princess Leia?

All became clear via Norris Cole’s farewell letter to his nearest and dearest (or those he could just about tolerate at least) that Roy delivered during the service. During the first of two Friday Corrie episodes, it was explained that Norris had once told Mary that he:

“didn’t care what my funeral was like – as long as you attended in your Princess Leia outfit…”

But Norris’ typical acerbic nature instantly halted Mary’s glee when he followed that with:

“…but even you’re not daft enough to fall for that.”

Hence why Mary went to a funeral dressed as a Star Wars character! Poor Mary – especially when amongst glamorous Rita and “timeless” Audrey (thanks Claudia). See other Corrie outfits here.
